The COVID-19 crisis has revealed the urgent need for health justice in our communities, and yet another critical reason for completing the Census. Each year, the federal government doles out more than $675 billion dollars in funding to pay for nurses, doctors, health benefits, affordable and emergency housing, among other services, and now more than ever, Black people need access to their fair share of dollars to survive and thrive, which are allocated based on Census numbers. CLSJ is on the frontlines of the fight for Census justice, and we’re hiring dedicated and committed community outreach workers to help Black New Yorkers get counted.
This entry-level position is ideal for college and graduate students, and young professionals with a commitment to racial justice, strong communication skills and community organizing experience. Outreach workers will distribute census information to community members at food, mutual aid distribution centers and transit hubs to assist residents in submitting the census; provide information to community organizations (i.e. churches, neighborhood associations, etc.) about the importance of completing the 2020 Census, especially for communities of African descent; and regularly update the Census Justice Coordinator on project developments. The Center for Law and Social Justice (CLSJ) at CUNY Medgar Evers College conducts quality legal advocacy, research, and training in a personal manner on major racial and social justice issues affecting New York City’s communities of African descent and the disenfranchised. Achieving an accurate census population count in communities of African descent across NYC, is one such major substantial racial and social justice issue.
Each year, based on census data, the federal government spends more than $675 billion dollars to pay for nurses, doctors, health benefits, affordable and emergency housing, teachers, bus and train lines, transportation infrastructure, senior services, infants and youth services, climate emergency care, and more. Each of the social services that will play key roles in our city’s recovery are funded in part by census data. Communities that are undercounted do not get their fair share of these resources, nor do they receive their fair share of political representation. Increasing the 2020 Census response rate in NYC’s “Hard to Count” Black communities will play a significant role in securing the proper level of services for the next ten years. This goal is made all the more necessary as the next few years will be shaped by recovery from the COVID19 pandemic.
CLSJ seeks community outreach workers to communicate with residents in hard to count census tracts about the importance of the Census, the kind of information gathered, the way that data is used, and explain how to complete and submit the 2020 Census form and support them in those efforts.
Specifically, Outreach Workers will:
Distribute census information to community members at food, mutual aid distribution centers and transit hubs to assist residents in submitting the census;
Provide information to community organizations (i.e. churches, neighborhood associations, etc.) about the importance of completing the 2020 Census, especially for communities of African descent; and
Communicate project developments regularly with the Census Justice Coordinator.
Demonstrated commitment to racial and social justice movements;
Experience in community organizing, direct outreach or campaign work, preferably in a nonprofit, public policy or advocacy-oriented setting;
Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
Proficient in use of technology such as laptop computers and tablets;
Attentive to details; and
Ability to work independently and also collaboratively with others, maintaining a positive, professional attitude.
